The vibrant city of Chicago gave me the rush to explore and begin my journey. As I was leaving the studios of Joffrey ballet I ran into Lauren who was an friend I used to go to the John Cranko School with. A bit like me, she decided to take another path and left Zurich ballet which is where she was dancing before her return to Chicago to follow new dreams and ambitions. We caught up over drinks with two other dancers visiting from Zurich and another dancer named Florian, who was previously with Eric Gautier's company in Stuttgart but is now dancing with Hubbard Street.
I really wanted to go and take class with Hubbard street dance which is known to be america's best contemporary dance company. I’ve heard so much about it and needed to see it for myself in order to understand what it is that I am looking for. I was stuck before with what Ballet had to offer me so by having these experiences was the only way to find out. The class was given by Peter Chu, who used to dance with Crystal Pite’s company Kidd Pivott, and has now formed his own company called Chuthis.
Normally entering an unfamiliar studio is daunting, I automatically feel the pressure of the people around, and with that put pressure on myself to look my best, not here. As I walked in I was immediately acknowledged and felt apart of the group. The class was beautifully constructed with a gradual build up through the body, with a lot of attention payed to where a movement develops from, this way of teaching was unfamiliar to me. I was thankful I met Florian and grateful for the new experience made.
